Brick ties under the 2024 OBC: pre-bent ties and 76 mm nails
The 2024 Ontario Building Code changed brick ties for masonry veneer: pre-bent before galvanizing and 76 mm nails. What to check.

Why it matters on site
- Supply: ties bent on site after galvanizing no longer meet the requirement, so check what your supplier is delivering before the masons start.
- Fasteners: shorter nails that were common on site before 2024 no longer comply; make sure 76 mm nails are on hand.
- Inspections: ties are covered as soon as the brick goes up, so builders need to be confident they're right before the masons start, and have a record to show it.
Checklist for builders and masons
- [ ] Ties on site are pre-bent before galvanizing (check the packaging or supplier documentation)
- [ ] 76 mm nails on site for fastening ties
- [ ] Tie spacing matches the code and your engineer's drawings, including extra ties at openings
- [ ] Ties long enough to span any exterior insulation and the air space
- [ ] Ties fastened through the water-resistive barrier into framing, sealed where the barrier manufacturer requires
- [ ] Each elevation photographed before masonry covers the ties
FAQ
Can ties still be bent on site?
The 2024 OBC requires ties to be pre-bent before galvanizing, so bending galvanized ties on site doesn't meet the requirement.
What nail length is required?
76 mm nails, under Article 9.20.9.5 of the 2024 Ontario Building Code.
Who installs ties: the mason or a separate trade?
Either. Some builders have ties installed ahead of the masons so the wall is ready when masonry starts. That's the service we provide.
